WHAT ARE BULLY STICKS? Dog chews made from baked pizzles. “Pizzle” is an old German name for a bovine male organ. Thus, they are not bones or compressed rawhide. The only ingredient is beef muscle tissue. Please take this into consideration with your expectation of how long they should last.
BULL VS STEER: A “steer” is a bull that has been fixed. A “bull” is a male that is still in tact. Due to less testosterone, steer sticks typically have less density and less moisture. This enables them to be chewed and digested easier. For this reason, steer sticks are great for older dogs, puppies and dogs with sensitive stomachs.
WHY ARE BULLY STICKS EXPENSIVE ?
Beef pizzle can only be harvested from bulls and steers. While muscle meat treats and bones come from ALL cattle (bulls, steers, heifers and cows.)Standard sized sticks and thicker have to come from bulls, not steers. Most ranches only have one bull per herd for safety reasons.Once harvested, the delicate raw pizzle has to be baked at a very low, specific temperature for several days. OUR ASSURANCE OF IMPERFECTION: Dog chews are made to look uniform by processing with cheap fillers and artificial colors. They are then punched out of a machine like a hot dog. Our bully sticks are made by Mother Nature and hand-trimmed by humans. They will never be the same size, aroma or color. Every stick will vary, just as bull and steer pizzles do in nature. The photo you see is a general guide. You will be disappointed if you expect sticks to look or smell the same every time. This is not a lack of quality control. It is our refusal to manipulate a product that is 100% natural. We grade sticks into weight ranges so you do not get extreme size differences from batch to batch. Some sticks puff out during the cooking process. They may look thick, but light and airy sticks will not last long. Dense, compact sticks may not look very thick, but with good weight to them, they will last. For these reasons, we use weight more than we use circumference in grading.

“There is a closet where everything dog-related is kept…treats, shampoo, towels, nail clippers etc go into what we call “Sancho & Lola’s Closet.”Howdy. Sancho & Lola, my German Pointers were found in bleak conditions. Since 2015, our little boutique brand from Texas has donated generously to canine rescues. When I adopted Sancho in 2011, it was clear he suffered from severe anxiety. The best thing for anxiety is exercise. The second best thing is a dog chew. I gave him rawhide but they gave him tummy trouble. When I discovered that conventional rawhide is a by-product of the leather industry and made with chemicals, I looked for an alternative. After a disastrous knee surgery, I gave up a 15-year career in the fine wine industry to study Functional Nutrition. I was appalled to learn that the low-fat, high-grain diet suggested to me by doctors in my youth was causing inflammation and contributing to joint pain in my 40’s. I was furious to see the main ingredient in most conventional dog treats was grains. Dogs are carnivores. They are not meant to eat genetically modified grains that look nothing like the grains our ancestors grew up with. This is why many people and pets cannot tolerate them.

Are they safe to give puppies? Yes. They will satisfy their need to chew. But introduce slowly to avoid tummy upset. Start with our thinner sizes (like our steer sticks). If your pup tends to inhale treats, start with a 12-inch and remove when it gets down to 2-3 inches.Can they give my dog loose stools? Yes, just like changing your dog’s food can. Some dogs have more sensitive digestive systems than others. Introduce slowly. Try adding canned pumpkin, ground flax seeds and plain yogurt to your pup’s diet. These aid in digestion and firm up stools. My dog has allergies to corn and wheat – do they contain any known allergens? No, they are 100% beef – nothing else. As long as your dog can tolerate beef, they should not have any issues related to cheap grains and soy.Are they sourced in the USA? Our odor-free Charcuterie style bully sticks and steer sticks are strictly sourced from pizzles farmed in the USA. Our Traditional bully sticks are made here, but to secure year-round availability, our sourcing must include pizzles farmed in all North America. Are they supposed to have a funky smell? Yep, compliments of Mother Nature. There are many variables as to why some batches have more of a smell than others. We do our best to grade out the most offensive ones, but keep in mind, dogs love stinky things. Odor is a small sacrifice to make for your pup’s enjoyment. Stick with our odor-free bullys and steers if smell is a deal-breaker for you.How long will they last? This will vary from dog to dog. It is important to get the appropriate size stick for the chew power of your dog. This is why we offer many choices. Bully Sticks are not meant to last as long as bones – they are baked tissue.
